If you want to experience the Great Barrier Reef yourself, there are plenty of ways to do it. You can either book a trip with a travel agency or choose to explore the region independently. Either way, you will find that traveling to the Great Barrier Reef gives you a true sense of nature’s power. Here are some reasons why it is such an incredible place to visit.

1. A World Heritage Site

The Great Barrier Reef was inscribed onto the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1981. This makes it one of the oldest protected areas in the world. It is located within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Reserve, making it a national park. As a result, the Great Barrier Reef receives special protection and is able to preserve its unique biodiversity.

2. Breathtaking Scenery

One reason why people love coming to the Great Barrier Reef is because of how breathtakingly gorgeous it is. It is truly a sight to behold. Whether you’re looking out at the sea or up at the sky, you’ll never tire of the view. And what’s even better is that you won’t have to spend a fortune to enjoy it. Visiting the Great Barrier Reef doesn’t require expensive airfare or accommodation. All you need to do is pack a few things and head down under.

Another thing that makes the Great Barrier Reef so popular is that it has some of the best diving opportunities available. There are dozens of dive sites all along the reef itself. But if you want to get away from the crowds, you can always go snorkeling. Most tour operators offer great deals on snorkel tours.

4. Rich History

The Great Barrier Reef may be full of beauty now, but it wasn’t always this way. When Europeans first arrived, the Great Barrier Reef was covered in thick forests. Today, these same trees grow right alongside skyscrapers. In fact, they play an important role in protecting the city from strong winds and waves.

5. Rare Species

When you think of wildlife, you probably imagine big cats and elephants. While those animals certainly exist, the Great Barrier Reef also plays host to some very rare creatures. One example is the Pink Ladyfish. These fish were only discovered back in 1998 and are considered endangered.

Coral is the main attraction here. Tons of different shapes, sizes and colors make coral reefs one of the most fascinating sights in the ocean. They’re just like the rainforests on land, which contain lots of plants and animals.

7. Incredible Underwater Landscapes

Fraser Island

Fraser Island

The island originally known as Great Sandy Island got its new name after tales of a shipwrecked sailor named Eliza Fraser. She was rescued by a passing vessel and taken to Sydney, where she married a wealthy landowner. In 1841, her husband died and left her a widow at age 23. She moved to Brisbane and bought a house there. One day while walking near her home, she was struck by lightning and killed. Her body was buried in the backyard.

In 1967, residents discovered what looked like a human skeleton under some rocks. When they dug up the bones, they found out that the person had been buried alive. They called the police, who did nothing. Finally, someone took matters into his own hands and removed the skull. He was shocked to discover that it belonged to a woman.

More than 30 years later, another couple saw something strange in the water off the coast of Queensland. There was a dead whale floating around. After diving down, they pulled the carcass ashore. They thought they had found a whale washed up on shore, but they couldn’t find the head. Then they noticed the jawbone sticking out of the ground. They realized that they had stumbled upon a burial site.

When officials arrived, they found a large number of graves dating back to the 19th century. At least 20 people are believed to be buried here. Some of the bodies were wrapped in sheets and others were simply laid next to each other. Most of the skeletons were wearing jewelry.

There were no names on the tombstones. Instead, there were numbers written on pieces of paper. Officials believe that the people buried here were poor sailors who had drowned at sea.

Today, visitors still come across the gravesites every now and then. But authorities don’t allow anyone to disturb the area anymore.
