Fraser Island
The island originally known as Great Sandy Island got its new name after tales of a shipwrecked sailor named Eliza Fraser. She was rescued by a passing vessel and taken to Sydney, where she married a wealthy landowner. In 1841, her husband died and left her a widow at age 23. She moved to Brisbane and bought a house there. One day while walking near her home, she was struck by lightning and killed. Her body was buried in the backyard.
In 1967, residents discovered what looked like a human skeleton under some rocks. When they dug up the bones, they found out that the person had been buried alive. They called the police, who did nothing. Finally, someone took matters into his own hands and removed the skull. He was shocked to discover that it belonged to a woman.
More than 30 years later, another couple saw something strange in the water off the coast of Queensland. There was a dead whale floating around. After diving down, they pulled the carcass ashore. They thought they had found a whale washed up on shore, but they couldn’t find the head. Then they noticed the jawbone sticking out of the ground. They realized that they had stumbled upon a burial site.
When officials arrived, they found a large number of graves dating back to the 19th century. At least 20 people are believed to be buried here. Some of the bodies were wrapped in sheets and others were simply laid next to each other. Most of the skeletons were wearing jewelry.
There were no names on the tombstones. Instead, there were numbers written on pieces of paper. Officials believe that the people buried here were poor sailors who had drowned at sea.
Today, visitors still come across the gravesites every now and then. But authorities don’t allow anyone to disturb the area anymore.
